Patkai introduces BA degree course in mass communication

Dimapur, September 13 (MExN): The Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) has adopted the University Commission (UGC)-sponsored Skill Development Course - Bachelor of Vocation (B Voc) in Multimedia and Communication into Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication, starting from the 2021-22 session. 

The decision was taken by the college authority in a meeting held on September 6, after a proposal was submitted by the Board of Studies of Multimedia and Mass Communication Department, a press release from the PCC Mass Comm department informed on Monday. Following the decision, a Board of Studies meeting was convened on September 11 last to design the syllabus for BA Mass Communication, it stated. 

External expert Dr V Ratnamala, Associate Professor, Dept of Mass Communication, Mizoram University and industry expert Dr Moalemba, Associate Editor, The Morung Express with three internal members Dr Dakter Esse, Rojen Wahengbam and Sopei Rungsung attended the meeting, the release stated. 

According to the release, the change was adopted with the objective of enabling students pursuing Mass Communication to obtain comprehensive and advanced education in the field and seek multiple career options. The change is also to encourage students to take up other liberal arts and science subjects exercising consideration over the inter-disciplinary nature of the course. This, the college hopes, will help students to not be limited by their skill sets but also widen their perspectives on different subjects the college offers, the release stated.

PCC Principal Dr T Pierü, urging the department to keep a tab on the energing trends in media studies, said the department can contribute to the growing needs of an information society in the state of Nagaland in particular and Northeast India in general.

The release informed that the B Voc course was introduced in Patkai in 2018 as a UGC-funded course to cater to the growing need for skill based education system as identified by the central government. 

The B Voc course in Patkai is specially curated for the benefit of students who wish to enrich their skills and expertise in entrepreneurship and media industry. After the successful and productive graduation of the first batch of B Voc students in 2021, the college and the department decided to turn the B Voc course into a BA course with effect from the current session, it added.
