CHÜMOUKEDIMA, SEPTEMBER 1 (MExN): Peace Channel conducted a one-day training program for the Peace Club leaders of Chümoukedima district on August 31 at Peace Centre, 7th Mile, Chümoukedima.

The training focused on empowering young voices with effective public speaking skills and promoting responsible social media practices.

James Phanungkiu delivered an insightful session on the “Impact of Social Media,” discussing both its positive and negative aspects. Emphasizing that social media enhances connectivity and communication, enabling people to stay connected across distances, he highlighted that it provides immediate access to information and news, supports self-expression and creativity and offers significant educational opportunities. Additionally, social media plays a vital role in business, marketing, career networking and broadens cultural and social exposure.

Phanungkiu also highlighted the negative impacts of social media, including addiction, exposure to fraud and cyberbullying and the spread of misinformation. He addressed privacy concerns and noted that excessive use of social media can contribute to mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, sleep disorders and time wastage. He stressed the importance of balanced and mindful use of these platforms to prevent them from detracting from quality time with loved ones.

Phanungkiu further explained that social media has profoundly transformed communication, society and business, reshaping how we interact and engage with the world. While platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter etc., have made global communication instantaneous and amplified social movements, they also pose challenges such as the spread of misinformation and the impact on mental health among children and youths.

Towards this, he urged students to create a supportive environment that fosters healthy social media habits and promotes positive online interactions. By recognizing both the benefits and drawbacks of social media, we can empower each other to harness its potential while minimizing its negative effects which ultimately will shape a brighter future for generations to come, he added.

The program concluded with a session led by Jose V. Abraham on the importance of “Public Speaking.” He shared essential skills needed to become an effective public speaker, highlighting the importance of dress code, facial expressions, confidence and body posture while on stage.

On the occasion, Peace Club members also took a peace pledge to promote peace in their families and schools, reinforcing their commitment to creating a harmonious community.
