Kohima | September 8
“Our leaders can change their loyalties when there is money involved. We (Nagas) can easily be bought with money, we have become that cheap. People do not trust us anymore. It proves that we do not follow any ideology, principle or philosophy. We (Nagas) are just a group of people after money and power.”
Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President, K Therie, said this today while speaking at NPCC’s first public meeting and campaign for the coming general elections on September 8 at the Congress Bhavan, Kohima.
Public meetings will be held in all districts, to culminate on September 28.
Striking at the ruling government Therie emphasized the “misuse and mismanagement” of power in Nagaland.
“Our children are being deprived of opportunity, justice and equality,” asserted Therie who criticized the corrupt functioning of the ruling NPF in Nagaland and the BJP in the Centre. A major objective of the NPCC, according to Therie, is to remove the RSS ideology, communalism from the soil of Nagaland which includes the political wing of BJP and its alliances.
“It is not the habit of Nagas to bribe, to ask for commissions, to steal what is rightly for the poor. Nagas were an honest people. We were respected for our honesty, truthfulness and integrity and not because we bribe, or take commissions. We never allowed thieves to rule over us. But now we are only respecting the thieves, the people who bribe, and the ones who loot the government’s money to build mansions for themselves,” claimed Therie.
Reminding the crowds about the migration of the youth in Nagaland, where many of them are compelled to seek employment in poor working environment, Therie questioned if the government is doing anything to salvage the exodus of our youth.
“We have no roads but they can afford SUVs to ride on potholes,” pointed out Therie.
The essence of a party’s manifesto and the need for the electorate to remind the party of its manifesto was also discussed. Although critical discussions against the government are underway among the young, Therie maintained that the discussion does not include the election manifesto of the party. “Election manifesto needs to be reminded to the ruling party and the youth need to question if they have fulfilled the election manifesto,” said Therie.
A major step
Hosted by the Kohima District Congress Committee, Kevi Vizo, President, KDCC informed that the public meeting is a major step towards strengthening the party as well as focus on strengthening the Naga society.
Empathizing with the frustration of the Naga public, Medokul Sophie, Former MLA & General Secretary, NPCC reminded that a government is formed by a political party so that the people have basic rights and amenities such as good roads, education, better standards of living, and to progress together.
“But what is our government doing? Our roads are not even walkable and our CM is demanding for additional flights. When the poor here are suffering without basic amenities, our government is demanding additional flights so that the few rich can fly on airplanes,” expressed Sophie.
After completing their education, many Naga youth are compelled to protest outside the Nagaland Secretariat for fair competition and equal opportunity, pointed out Sophie. “Forget politics, let us focus on how the whole Naga society can progress. Let us decide how we can progress our society and people together,” urged Sophie.
Meanwhile Seyiekuolie, Former Minister, and Treasurer, NPCC assured the participants at the meeting that “Kohima belongs not just to Angamis but to everyone.” “We want to ensure equality and the rights of each citizen,” stated Seyiekuolie.
