People urged to take disaster management seriously

Community First Responder training for Kohima district underway

Kohima, June 28 (MExN): District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kohima is organising a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Community First Responder for Kohima district from June 27 to 30 at Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland conference hall here.

Delivering the welcome cum keynote address, Thejangulie Zao, DDMO Kohima said, “The main objective of the CFR training is to impart and equip the community with the knowledge and skills of disaster management so that they are empowered to tackle various disasters.” He welcomed all the participants from different sub divisions of Kohima district.

TL Kiusumong Tikhir, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kohima urged the stakeholders and village councils to be more affirmative in their response when various trainings are conducted. Disaster management, he stated, is more than money and cited instances where people often come to the office only to enquire about funds under Disaster Management.

“Disaster Management is all about saving lives and service to the people,” he said, while expressing regret that people take trainings casually and have no due priority for such trainings which he said is discouraging and will not help in the long run.

“Kohima being the capital, should be exemplary for the rest of the districts, therefore, the people have to be more prepared than others in various fields especially in disaster management as disaster is bound to strike any moment anywhere,” he added.

He urged the participants to be focussed and be open-minded saying human minds are so much like an umbrella that unless it is opened, it does not work or serve its purpose. He concluded with a remark that disaster management is a very serious subject and that the CFRs will be shouldering the responsibility to train others as they go back to their respective sub-divisions/villages.

Victor Yhome, DPA Kohima in a press release informed that the first day of the training dwelt on topics such as Introduction to Disaster Management in India and Nagaland, Incident Response System, Roles and Characteristics of CFR and Knotting by Jonjibemo Odyuo SRRO, Johnny Ruangmei OSD, Khrolou Koza Lohe STCBO and the SDRF respectively.

The training was attended by all the five sub-divisions of Kohima district. Altogether, there were 40 trainees with more scheduled to join from the second day.
