Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): The Peren Students Union has questioned what it charged is the ‘step-motherly’ treatment meted out to Peren District by the State Government of Nagaland and demanded that the government and its implementing agencies fully carry out the needful projects for the benefit of the common people.
The students' organization while implying that the people are now aware of recent developments unlike when ‘they were innocent’, also cautioned that the students would not remain silent spectators.
In a representation to the Deputy Commissioner of Peren, the PSU highlighted some of the grievances being faced by the students and the people in general namely in regard to the Peren Government College, up-gradation of the District Education Officer , up-gradation of the Peren power circuit and problems regarding absenteeism in government offices in the district. The representation was appended by Rangro Herie, president of the PSU.
The PSU while appreciating the government for taking over Peren College appealed for sanction of projects for construction of a college building with hostel facility at the permanent site donated by the Peren Village.
“The present college building belongs to the Government High school, Peren (abandoned boys hostel). Till date the college does not have a building of its own. Therefore, the government needs to give priority” the representation stated. It also appealed for classroom furniture and also an examination centre for Class XII (HSSLC).
In regard to the District Education Officer, the PSU stated that the “post-inauguration brought numerous developmental activities by upgrading the various departments that of district status”. However, the education department, which according to the PSU is one of the most important of departments, is still functioning under the Deputy Inspector of Schools, Peren.
The PSU in this regard appealed to the government to upgrade the office of the DEO at the earliest in the interest and welfare of the students in particular and the public in general.
The students’ organization also called for up-gradation of the office of the Junior Engineer to that of Executive Engineer of Peren and also to link the power loadage with minimum 66KV from Dimapur station to Peren. “The power department in Peren District headquarter is still under the mercy of the Junior Engineer (presently no Junior Engineer is posted in Peren).
The office is manned by a handful of staff and Peren is linked with only 33KV line, whereas there are thousands of consumers” the representation stated.
The Peren students also took serious note of absenteeism of government servants, especially officers, in their respective offices in the district. “Another important factor which effects the public is the irregularities of most of the government employees, particularly officers, due to which many a time the public faces inconveniences and problems” the PSU stated and appealed to the government to look into the matter “very seriously” by implementing the government order of “no work no pay” in order to bring justice to the people.
The organization was of the strong opinion that there “are far too many instances where developments, projects and assets have been hooked out to another place or to unknown destinations”.
“Thus far, we have been deprived of our generator, a camera projector, a stone crusher and Bull-dozers. District Computer Centre, video conferencing network facility was rescued by grace (because the union went into action and stopped the deportation business in front of the Deputy Commissioner, government officers and security forces). The latest deprivation is under PHED department – the ancestral Rural Water Supply Programmes where 89.11 Lakhs has already been incurred up to the end of 2004-2005 out of 104.14 Lakhs projects and NST departments where not even a single NST bus is plying in Peren (only government knows the reasons” the representation lamented while adding that “if we go on writing it will be endless”. The PSU asked that the government answer to the people.
