PhD requirement for assistant professors postponed till 2023: UGC

Kohima, October 13 (MExN): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided not to make a PhD mandatory for the post of Assistant Professors in departments of universities till July 1, 2023. The change has been introduced in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2018, the UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulation was introduced, which required that all candidates for the assistant professor position to have a doctoral degree. A three year period for the transition was given and the mandatory requirement was to be introduced from July 1, 2021 for the 2021-22 academic year.

However, UGC has now decided to put this requirement on hold for another two years in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
