Phek gets education on facing disaster-situations

A two-day workshop on disaster management was held at Phek, conducted at DC Conference Hall, on September 19-20. The workshop was held under the theme “Overcome disaster before they overcome you”. 

On day one, Phek Deputy Commissioner Sachopra Vero, in his keynote address, emphasized the importance and need of awareness on disaster Management. In the first session of day-one, Superintendent of Police Sandeep M Tamgadge IPS, Phek spoke on the topic; “Comprehensive view of disaster management and preparedness”. In his presentation, the SP categorized two types of disasters viz., natural and man-made disasters, citing an example of the 1995 Kobe fire, Gujarat earthquake, Tsunami etc. “We need to be self-reliant and well-equipped with basic knowledge of disaster awareness so as to avoid complete collapse of critical service and infrastructure. Disaster cannot be prevented but loss of lives and properties can be minimized through the well co-cordinated efforts and action well in time,” he said.  SDO (C) Phek Dinesh Kumar IAS, focused on the topic “Need for disaster management awareness and generation campaign”. He emphasized  on the framework of disaster management, dealing on the policy of management, preparedness, mitigation and prevention, formation of committees at various levels and obtaining community” he said.

In the second session, Maj. SS Negi, Adjt. 33rd Assam Rifles, Phek spoke on the topic “Search and rescue”. Highlighting the strength of action to be taken by security personnel, Negi stressed on exigent tasks and required equipments to be carried out. Er.Tiameren, EE, PWD (R&B) Phek stressed on materialized buildings to be reinforced so as to avoid unnecessary collapse of the buildings. “Technological resistance and retrofitting is the only way to keep ourselves from the earthquake and other disasters, he said. 

On day-two, “First aid and necessary precautions during disasters” was presented by the Medical Department of Phek led by Dr. Joel. Preserving lives, prevention of worsening of conditions and promotion of recovery agents were highlighted as the main aims of the department. “Airway, breathing and circulation plays a key role in the initial assessment of implementing disaster management” he said. Vekrotsu Swuro, Sr. Lecturer, Phek Government College, shared his experiences at the session. He reminded that knowing the conditions of the environment, educating others with the basic knowledge of disaster management and enough experiences can face the eventualities. He said disasters directly affect national economy and therefore preparedness, mitigation and prevention should be well-equipped.

SDO(C) Phek Dinesh Kumar, IAS offered the vote of thanks. Approximately 82 participants from departments, institutions, Town council, and representatives from Churches, NGOs, as well as the Press attended the workshop.
