Phesama: Body of drowned girl recovered

The dead body of the 14-year-old girl swept away at Dzücharü Dzüvo, Phesama was found this morning around 7:00 am near the Hydroger. The girl, Sorila Yimchunger, was reportedly buried at the Naga cemetery near BSF camp on Monday afternoon.  

She went missing on Sunday evening along with her mother after they slipped and fell in a waterfall, and were swept off by powerful river currents. The mother was later rescued.  

On Sunday, the Phesama village youth along with police personnel and the Nagaland State Disaster Response Force Team went on a search and rescue operation.  

They rescued the mother from a cliff alive with multiple injuries and took her to Bethel Hospital.  

The girl’s body was located and picked up by a Phesama youth named Keneikhoto Kaimo, who is also a part of the Khriekesa Pelikro, a community level first responder (Angami Youth Organisation volunteer), informed a Phesama Village youth.  

He is one among the 100 Khriekesa Pelikros from the four Angami regions who were trained last year on disaster preparedness and environmental protection for community level first responders initiated by the AYO, NSDMA, Department of Homeguards & Civil Defence and the Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change.  

Meanwhile, the Yimchungrü Union Kohima (YUK) extended gratitude to District administration Kohima, District Disaster Management Authority, DEF Kohima, Phesama Village Council and its various frontal organizations and churches, Angami Youth Organisation, Southern Angami Youth Organisation, Angami Women Organisation, Southern Angami Women Organisation, and all the well wishers in and around Kohima for rendering their service and help in retrieving the body on time.  

The Union also mourned the demise of the girl and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
