A plan is being proposed to make Kohima one-way route keeping in mind the need to address traffic congestion in the capital, informed Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, MLA 9th Kohima Town A/C on Saturday.
It is likely to start from October this year, Dr Rhütso said, addressing the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Tsiepfutsiepfhe (AG) Upper Sector.
Speaking on the on the sidelines of the event, he further informed The Morung Express that although the proposal is not finalised, it has been planned to be rolled out by October so that traffic congestion is made smooth before December Hornbill Festival.
The one way route is likely be enforced from 6am to 8pm.
To execute the plan, new passage will be opened up and it is being discussed at the district level, he added.
Earlier, at the event, DrRhütso asserted that traffic jams in Kohima have become very chronic and adversely affecting the economy of the capital due to time lost in such jams.
If we think of a one-way route, from New Reserve, Phesama to Secretariat, Kohima, if there is no traffic jam, it hardly takes 20 minutes, he opined, further highlighting the benefits, if the plan goes realistically as envisaged.
Calling for cooperation of the public, Dr Rhütso added: “This proposal, however, cannot alone be successfully implemented by the traffic police or administration. We need the support of the youth, colony members.”
In case, the new traffic regulation are brought about, he also called for support and co-operation with the implementing agencies.
