Plastics banned in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council jurisdiction

Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwel Chyne today informed that the Executive Council has taken a decision to ban the use of plastics in areas and all traditional markets which fall within the jurisdiction of the KHADC.

Speaking to media persons, Chyne said that earlier in 2019 the KHADC had issued the same order to ban the use of plastic in markets that fall under the jurisdiction and a similar notification was sent to Himas to keep a check on the use of plastic in every market.

“This notification is the same notification which was notified in 2019 and this recent order is the follow up to remind the people that the use of plastic from today onwards is banned in all traditional markets which fall under the jurisdiction of the KHADC,” said Chyne.

Chyne said that in this regard the council urged all Himas, traditional heads and all shopkeepers to adhere to the order in order to make all traditional markets a plastic-free zone.

He added that the council will soon form an enforcement team along with the police personnel of Hima Mylliem to conduct checking in Iewduh and also to educate people on the harm of using plastics.

On actions against those shops using plastic, CEM of the KHADC Titosstarwel Chyne said that all violators will be punished according to law.

Chyne also informed that the EC will again discuss the solid waste management bill which was advised by the governor to be examined by the expert committee before getting the assent. He added that EC will again introduce the bill in the ongoing session before getting the final nod from the governor.
