Households in Nagaland spend more on meat, fish, and eggs than on any other food item category, according to the ‘Family Budget Enquiry 2022–2023’ conducted by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland. The survey, which covered 3,718 households across rural and urban areas, provides an updated picture of food consumption and expenditure trends in the state.  As per the report, the average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) on meat, fish, and eggs stands at Rs 504.15, making it the largest food-related expense in the state

Among these, pork commands the highest share at Rs 189.42 per person, followed by chicken at Rs 82.92 and beef at Rs 81.72. Fish and eggs accounted for Rs 74.96 and Rs 51.72 respectively.

Rural households spent an average of Rs 475.68 on meat, fish, and eggs, while urban households reported higher spending at Rs 554.52.  Notably, rural areas showed a higher preference for beef over chicken, with average spending of Rs 80.07 and Rs 72.39 respectively.  In contrast, urban areas reported higher expenditure on chicken (Rs 98.23) than beef (Rs 83.86).

In terms of consumption quantity, pork also topped the list with an average monthly intake of 0.61 kilograms per person. Chicken followed at 0.38 kilograms, beef at around 0.30 kilograms, and fish at 0.37 kilograms. Egg consumption averaged 7.96 units per person per month.

Beyond protein
Beyond meat and protein sources, the survey also highlighted top expenditure items across other major food categories.  In cereals, rice accounted for the highest average MPCE at Rs 275.75 from other sources and Rs 13.52 from PDS.

Among edible oils, mustard oil led with an average monthly spend of Rs 30.86. In the spices and condiments category, dry chillies accounted for the highest expenditure at Rs 23.92. Tea leaf was the most spent-on item in the beverages category at Rs 58.56. For milk and milk products, milk powder recorded the highest expenditure at Rs 140.51.

According to the Department, the survey recently uploaded on the department’s website was conducted under Support for Statistical Strengthening Sub-Scheme of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India. The MOSPI’s national report was released earlier this year.
