President Rule in Nagaland just to rig election: MPs

Dimapur, January 4 (MExN): “The constitutional scheme of protecting Governments against devious games of defectors was indeed upheld by the Speaker. However, as a gift for running the state in accordance with the constitution, the centre has now imposed President’s Rule merely to rig election in their favour” stated the political statement from the members of Parliament from Nagaland, W.Wangyuh Konyak (MP Lok Sabha) and T.R Zeliang (MP Rajya Sabha).

Lamenting that the recent imposition of President’s rule will continue to proliferate opportunistic defector creating instability in the state in future the statement shared “We, as representative of the people of Nagaland, strongly and unequivocally condemn the hideous act of the Union Government which has overthrown a constitutionally elected Government for illegally promoting and furthering the chances of the Congress Party in the state”

The statement accused New Delhi’s Congress leadership as no better that the military run Pakistan under General Musharraf. The difference according to the statement was that “the former believes in sham democratic structures while the later believes in constitutional dictatorship”. Asserting that Nagas are politically conscious and highly literate, the statement challenged that the answer to Congress party manipulative politic will be now at the people’s court, towards the congress party nemesis. According to the statement “Article 356 intended to protect against failure of constitutional machinery in a state has been abused by the Congress Party in Nagaland to bring failure of constitutional machinery which is a travesty of justice to the Nagas.”

The murder of democracy by the Union government through the imposition of President’s Rule is bound to cause serious aversion amongst Nagas about their trust in the Union Government, with the state going for election in the next two months the statement stated. The MPs mince no words while stating that “the much talk about peace process resulting in a honourable settlement with a separate constitution for the Nagas has received a setback with the latest abuse of constitution against pride and honour of the Nagas.”

The statement ridiculed the Congress party by stating “with defeat staring at its face in Nagaland too, the Congress has become desperate to resume power in the state. As through elections Congress cannot come to power, it wants to retain the dictatorial hold the Nags through Presidents Rule”. Accusing the Congress party that the situation can be saved for the party only by rigging the elections, the MPs s reminded that “the foundation for that electoral mischief by imposing the unwarranted Presidents Rule in the state”

Stating that the NPF has chosen to challenge the President’s Rule in the Supreme Court at the earliest, the two MPs stated that “the DAN Government with its envious record of achievements, is the first, foremost and only preference of the Nagas.”
