Project Green Thumbs, a project initiated by a voluntary group of environmentally concerned individuals of Mokokchung, kick started on Saturday with a cleanliness drive and planting of flowers along the roads of the town. With the sole aim of bettering Mokokchung towards cleanliness and greenness, the main objective of the group is to instill a spirit of civic sense and create awareness amongst the denizens of Mokokchung about the importance of having a clean and green environment.
One member of the group, Achi Pongen, said, “We do not encourage going for donation drives as this is purely a voluntary project and anybody of any age, either married or unmarried, can get involved and help during the social work or in cash and kind. If anybody believes they can bring a change by volunteering, that is it. Nobody is forced to join.”
The group members initiated the first project by collecting few amount from their own pockets. The flowers that were planted were donated by Yongpangnaro Floral Shop and Ajungla Soyah. Ongerna, a team from Ungma village, who are working under the Swachh Bharat Mission also joined in the cleanliness and plantation drive.
The group will keep a check on the plants from time to time and also plans on carrying out more cleanliness drive in and around the town monthly or bimonthly. The group members feel that change can happen without having to wait for others to do the work and even without much financial funding. Through the Project Green Thumbs, the group aims to spread the true message of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
