Protect lives, properties and means of livelihood of Nagas: NSF to KAADC

Kohima, January 25 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation in a letter to the Chief Executive Member (CEM)  Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council (KAADC) Tuliram Ronghang, among others, has appealed him to “ensure that the lives, properties and means of livelihood of the Nagas living in the border belt under your jurisdiction is protected through your active intervention.”

The NSF's intervention came after the KAADC authorities reportedly issued an eviction notice for the land situated at Borijan Mauza Lahorijan Block-3, Balijan 'C' Khan Basti bordering Nagaland, near IV/LRC colony, Dimapur.

“80 per cent of the land owners are Nagas who bought the lands and constructed their dwelling houses with GPF and pension money post their retirement are threatened to be robbed of the same due to the impugned notice,” stated the letter appended by NSF President Kegwayhun Tep and General Secretary Süpüni Ng Philo.

The residents of the village are law abiding and peace-loving citizens living under the administrative jurisdiction of KAADC and it is recognised as Balijan 'C' Khan Basti in all official correspondences, it said.

It is one of the oldest villages bordering Nagaland State and is neither a reserved forest nor a disputed Government Land, the NSF pointed out.

The Federation also noted that residents freely exercise adult franchise and enjoy all welfare schemes like ration cards, job cards and also avail electricity provided by the state government.

Against this backdrop, the NSF requested the KAADC authority to look into the matter based on merit and ensure that the residents of Balijan `C' Khan Basti are protected from the “eviction drive as any action to the contrary will render the residents homeless and throw them out on the streets thereby opening up avenues for social disorders and communal disharmony.”

In the interest of upholding the friendly relations between the Nagas and the Karbi people, the NSF further appealed the CEM against resorting “to drastic actions which could destabilise this harmony built over the years by the sweat and tears of our fore-fathers.”
