Normal vehicular movement along the NH-2 was disturbed on Sunday after residents of Sangakpham area in Imphal blocked the road.
The residents blocked the highway to highlight the problems being faced by the residents owing to the bad road condition of the highway in the area.
The blocking of the highway meant disturbing movement of inter-state vehicles including inter-state buses along the highway.
Intervention by the police forced to end the road blockade which started from early morning. The police dispersed the residents, mostly womenfolk. Later, the road was opened.
However, residents set September 10 as deadline to resume the road blockade with intense form.
"If the authority of the state government fails to take up necessary ground works for the improvement of the highway before the set deadline, the blockade will be resumed from September 12", said W Usha Leima, a member of the Chingmeirong Mamang Leikai Meira Paibi Lup.
The stretch of the highway is maintained by the state Public Works department and despite the bad condition of the road, the authority failed to take up improvement works for a long time, the protestors said. "
Besides, the residents of the area are facing lots of inconveniences including health problems as the road is dusty, Usha Leima alleged.
