Protest rally against rape of elderly woman

Pughoboto, October 2 (MExN): The Mishilimi Totimi Hoho, Sumi Aphuyemi Totimi Hoho, Mishilimi Students’ Union, Mishilimi Council and public of Pughoboto staged a protest rally here on October 2 in condemnation of the rape of a physically challenged woman in her 60s in Mishilimi of Pughoboto sub-division allegedly by one Mutibur Rahman. After the rally, a memorandum was submitted to the ADC Pughoboto demanding strict action and life imprisonment for the accused.  

ADC Avelu Ruho in presence of the administrative officer, SDPO and DBs assured the gathering that the case will be forwarded to the higher authority to accord strictest penalty to the accused.  

Meanwhile, the All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) has issued an ultimatum to the Zunheboto district administration. The ultimatum appended by SKK general secretary, Vikai Yeptho and president, Ninoto Awomi stated that all illegal immigrants must leave Zunheboto district jurisdiction within 30 days of this notice. It also told the district administration that issuing and renewal of ILP to non-Nagas in Zunheboto district must be completely stopped immediately till the State government implements a proper mechanism.  

It further demanded that all issuing of trade licenses, driving licenses, birth certificates, identity and residential proof certificates to non-Nagas in Zunheboto district should be stopped immediately.  

After the expiry of the 30-day ultimatum, it stated, SKK and its federating units will start checking and stringent action will be taken against any defaulter found.   Condemning the rape, SKK asserted that such act cannot be pardoned under any circumstances.  

Accused in police custody

Meanwhile, the Zunheboto police informed that a man (in his 20s) linked to the crime was taken into custody. The accused was apprehended at Pughoboto town by the public on October 1 and handed over to the police. The police said that he was a mason by profession and a resident of the town.  

As per the Zunheboto police, the incident reportedly occurred sometime in the first week of September at Mishilimi village. It came to light only after the suspect was caught. In his preliminary statement to the police, he was said to have admitted to the crime. With DIPR inputs
