Pungro timber traders condemn ‘illegal taxation’ at check gates

Pungro, February 12 (MExN): The Pungro Sub-Division Timber Traders Union said that ‘illegal taxation’ is being forced on traders at check gates and called on the state government to take action against those involved in the illegal practice.

In a press release on Friday, the union also said it was appalled by the state government’s lack of concern for the welfare of people who survive on trading timber for livelihood. “The impact of the taxes being levied on the traders is at the peak, felt by trucks ferrying from our district. The officials at the check gates in this act has shown the ugly side of their nature and extorted the innocent traders,” the release stated.

It also expressed support to the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union and appealed the state government to do away with the taxes and take action against erring officials.
