Quota review after final 2011 census

Kisama | September 22 : Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has said that total review of the reservation policy in Nagaland will be done after the final publication of 2011 Census. In this regard, Rio said, a Committee will be formed who will thoroughly study the educational and economical aspects and the outcome will be emerged from there.
Rio disclosed this during the golden jubilee celebration of Kohima Chakhesang Students Union here today.
Touching on backward tag of Chakhesang tribe, he said Chakhesangs are heading towards advancement and progressing in every field, adding that they are even outnumbering even advanced tribe in terms of employment and literacy rate. Justifying this, he referred the statistics which show that Chakhesangs now ranked 4th position in administration with 17 NCS as against the highest belonging to Ao tribe with 52. Further, Chakhesangs have 25 in the NPS. He said administration and police are two major components in running the affairs of the government.
In education, Rio said, the National literacy rate stands at 74.04% whereas Nagaland state touched above national average with 80.11% as per 2011 census. He said that Chakhesang tribe with literacy rate at 79.13% shows that they are only a little distance from the state literacy rate. Appreciating the inborn quality of sincerity, honesty and hard working possessed by Chakhesangs, he wished them further progress and urged upon them to contribute something for the others too.
Rio asserted that Chakhesangs, leaving aside the complexity, are now placed in a special position in different fields through their hard work, which he said can be justified through their good performance in education, farming and economic activities. On the other hand, Rio called upon the youth to adopt a positive attitude in their thinking and feelings, which he said will go a long in bringing a positive change in the society.
Reminding the students that habit becomes our character and character become one’s image, the Chief Minister said a good image of any individual can brighten the corner, thereby create a congenial atmosphere to live in.
“Our economy is a salary economy,” Rio said. He cited that by the first week of the month heavy marketing becomes the order of the day followed by low marketing in the middle of the month and by the end of the month many have no option but to take goods on credit. Referring to employment scenario in government sector in Nagaland, Rio said that it has reached a saturation point.
The Chief Minister said the rate of employment in government sector is high. Presently, there are about 1, 11,000 government employees in the state against little over 19 lakh population.
Sharing this trend to the gathering, Rio said the “Year of youth empowerment” has been declared by the government so as to make them employable by opening several avenues and programmes and further maintained that many Naga youth are now serving in various parts of the country and even abroad.
