Dimapur, Sept 27 (MExN): Nagaland this year has received only a marginal amount of rainfall, affecting rural economy, with the farming community in the far-flung areas away from urban areas and facilities, being the hardest-hit. Jandalashung, a remote village in the Ralan Range areas under Wokha district is also one of the casualties of the reduced monsoon. Authorities of the village have appealed to the government and NGOs for assistance in the wake of a poor harvest which has impacted the careers of school-going children.
According to the Jandalashung ‘B’ Village Council, the economic conditions of the farmers in the border areas are bound to worsen due to the drought-like situation this year. “This would certainly have an adverse impact on the academic career of the school-going children as the villagers are entirely dependent on their harvest for their sustenance and to meet the expenses of their children” according to an appeal issued by Renben Humtsoe, Head GB of Jandalashung ‘B’ Village. He stated that farmers in the mentioned areas have no alternative now but to “wait for the worse times”.
“Besides, farmers were put to such circumstances as no such modern facility have been provided or is available till date to counter any such situation. The drought has badly affected about 12 Lotha villages located in the plain section under Ralan area alone and has threatened to cut short the academic career of about two hundred school children by next year 2007, the appeal stated.
Taking into consideration the mentioned difficulties being faced by the areas, the village council has appealed to the concern government department and NGOs for action. “…take note of the matter seriously and may initiate steps to help the farmers in whatever possible ways and also may provide the required facilities to counter any such situation that may arise in future” added the appeal.
