Jalukie (MExN): The Range Office staff of Jalukie Range, Peren Forest Division during its regular exercise in the implementation of the “Wild Life Protection Act” carried out surprise inspection at the daily market here today at Jalukie Town and seized a good number of wild livestock both dead and alive.
Talking to this correspondent, Rampaukai, the Range Officer informed that most of the wild livestock were endangered species, particularly the Hornbill, the most revered bird of the Nagas which is found only in few pockets of Nagaland. Ranger Officer Rampaukai lamented that if the tradition of hunting and killing wild life forms continues at the present rate, most of them would be extinct within a very short time.
The Range Officer also regretted that such activities were still being carried out by the people in spite of several warnings served earlier. The official in this regard appealed to the people to abstain from such random killings of wild animals.
It may be mentioned that the seized items were of a variety of avian species including two Hornbills and also meat and carcasses of stags and deer besides others which are presently being kept in Forest Department’s custody. It may also be pointed out that most of these wild lives come from surrounding villages and are regularly transported to bigger market at Dimapur and Kohima where they fetch higher prices.
