Western Chakhesang Youth Organization (WCYO) organized a cultural programme on the theme ‘Rejuvenate our cultural values’ here at Town Hall on Monday with SK Kenye, former director, Geology & Mining, Government of Nagaland, as resource person.
Dwelling on the theme, the resource person said Nagaland Government has rightly named Phek District, inhabited in majority by the Chakhesang tribe, as ‘Land of traditions.’
“In a nutshell, culturally, Chakhesang was considered as one of the most advanced tribe. The manner the young people respect the elders, the husbands love their wives, the wives respect their husbands, the men folk guard and protect their sisters, sincerity of thought and believe in their religion, reliability and trustworthiness and so on”, Kenye said.
However with the change of time, Naga youths have started to assume western values as their culture and pushed the rich culture and traditions of their forefathers to the background and presently are on the brink on losing their God-given identity completely, he said.
The former bureaucrat said to rejuvenate the cultural values of Naga (Chakhesang) forefathers, the younger generation should start imbibing and restoring the values of hardwork, respect for elders, community living, respect for women, sacrifice, honour, honesty and zeal for truth.
Kenye also suggested initiation of a movement for re-education and positive brainwashing of the youth from an early age by introducing compulsory Naga cultural books in schools at the primary level.
“Culture is always changing, refining and synthesizing. The youth are growing up in a diverse and multi-cultural world. What the Nagas and the world need today is a generation that grows up to have a high sense of commitment to the community and neighbor and to the world; a younger generation which is capable in all faculties of modern life and yet can protect and uphold our identity”, he said.
President, Western Chakhesang Hoho, Vekhosayi Nyekha, and special invitee, Dr. Roland Lotha, also exhorted the Chakhesang youth.
Earlier, president WCYO, Likalo Letro, delivered welcome address. Sixteen constituents units of WCYO took part in the cultural programme.
