The citizens of Nagaland, particularly those residing in relatively warmer climates such as Dimapur and adjoining districts, might witness some relief in a day or so, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting increased rainfall in the coming days.
According to the 7-Day ‘Local Weather Report and Forecast’ by the IMD, the maximum temperature in Dimapur increased from 35.4°C on July 23, surging to as high as 40.6°C on July 26.
In the state capital, Kohima, the maximum temperature has also been on an upward trend since July 23, peaking at 32.4°C on July 27, according to the IMD’s data. A generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain brought down the temperatures slightly for both Dimapur and Kohima on July 28. However, on Sunday, the maximum temperature hovered around 37°C in Dimapur, while the minimum was 27.1°C. The relative humidity at 8:30 AM was 73% in Dimapur. The same temperatures are expected to prevail on July 29 in Dimapur.
In Kohima, the maximum temperature was 30.6°C on July 28, while the minimum was 17.2°C. The relative humidity was 65%.
Meanwhile, according to the IMD’s weather bulletin issued on Sunday evening, on July 28, the maximum temperature at isolated places over Nagaland was above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C). Further, the minimum temperature was also above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over Nagaland.
Hot and humid weather prevailed in Nagaland on Sunday as forecasted by the IMD. . Additionally, load-shedding further contributed to the discomfort.
However, from July 30, there is a possibility of some relief, with the IMD forecasting the maximum temperature to decrease to 35°C, with a likelihood of fairly widespread rainfall. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to fall further to 32°C and 26°C, respectively, in Dimapur from August 1-3. In Kohima, the maximum temperature is expected to fall to around 27°C from July 30.
Forecast till August 1
The IMD’s evening bulletin stated that there is a very likelihood of ‘very heavy rainfall’ at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from July 30 to August 1. Isolated ‘heavy rainfall’ is also expected at isolated places on July 29, it added.
The bulletin also noted that ‘widespread/most places’ (70-100%) rainfall is expected across Nagaland from July 29-31, subsiding thereafter to ‘fairly widespread/many places’ (51-75%) from August 1-3. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places were also forecasted during the July 29-August 1 period.
Accordingly, the IMD has issued an ‘Orange’ (Be Prepared) alert for Nagaland from July 30 to August 1.
However, region-specific updates from the IMD Kohima Centre on Sunday afternoon indicated that rainfall activity in Dimapur and Peren is likely to be ‘scattered’ during the July 28 to August 1 period, though there is a ‘Yellow Alert’ for July 31 and August 1. Dimapur includes the adjoining districts of Chümukedima and Niuland.
The IMD’s evening update may be reflected in the Centre’s next update on July 29.
