The Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) and the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) observed the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 at the SIRD Auditorium. Along with the commemoration, Mission Effloresce and 1st Generation Women Entrepreneurs was also launched as a mark of commitment to provide platform for women entrepreneurs to foster their dynamism. Further, Sakhi-the One Stop Centre (OSC) Scheme for women affected by violence (Kohima) was also launched.
Kiyaneilie Peseyie, Minister of Social Welfare graced the occasion as the chief guest while the guest of honor was Ajay Kumar Dhir, Chairman & Founder, Oranda-Global, Apax CXO & Global Women Leaders Forum. In her keynote address, Dellirose M Sakhrie, IAS, Secretary to Government of Nagaland, Department of Social Welfare gave a brief history of the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women where in 1960 the three Mirabel sisters, political activists were assassinated on orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo.
“Violence is a consequence of discrimination against women and a glaring manifestation of gender disparities,” said Sakhrie who called upon the community to seek to change the hearts and minds of individuals by calling on all members of society, in particular men and boys, to change attitudes.
Today is also a day to make a renewed call for greater equality between women and men, said Sakhrie, because violence is perpetuated by a culture of intolerance and denial. Speaking further on the empowerment of women in relation to the activities of the Social Welfare department in Nagaland, Sakhrie mentioned about the initiative of Mission Effloresce and 1st Generation Women Entrepreneurs which has been launched in order to foster skills and dynamism of women entrepreneurs, and enhance their productivity which will ultimately improve their economic status.
“It has been proved time and again that when women are afforded their rights and given the opportunity to pursue education, employment, and political participation, they become the driving force behind social and economic progress. They not only lift up themselves but their families, communities and their nation as well,” affirmed Sakhrie.
Lauding the program of NSSWB and SRCW on the launching of Mission Effloresce and 1st Generation Women Entrepreneurs, Kiyaneilie Peseyie asserted that the initiation goes beyond creating awareness on gender based violence and proving referral services to women affected by violence, but it elevates the economic independence of women to achieve greater heights of success.
Peseyie also called upon the governments, international organizations and NGOs to raise public awareness and to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world. Speaking on the government’s support towards women, Bendang Aier, from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) said it has been focusing on “dependability not dependency, development needs women” as its gender planning process with the objective of bringing gender into development, and make gender a partner in development.
Providing a brief introduction of OSC scheme, which is under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Kohima DC Rovilato Mor mentioned that the services provided under the scheme are emergency response and rescue services, medical assistance, legal assistance, psychosocial support, shelter and video conferencing facility. For the success of the scheme, the need for coordination among stakeholders, agencies and service providers, monitoring functions on monthly basis, review and report on progress were highlighted.
