‘Revival of culture is important in our society’

Kohima Science College on cultural day inform students ‘to use traditional attire every Wednesday ’

The Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (An autonomous PG Government College) today observed its cultural day with much pomp and traditional gaiety under the theme ‘Reviviscence.’
Speaking on the occasion as the special guest, K. D. Vizo, Principal Secretary for power & information technology stressed on the need to revive the rich culture and traditions.
“Revival of culture is very important in our society,” he said.
He said that the young generation spend time on their smart phones and TV but have no time for their family and reminded that in the end, money, wealth and power is not going to give happiness in ones’ life “so we should preserve the culture and good habits our forefathers.”
He expressed concern that in the modern world, with advancement of technology such as mobile phones, there is no time for culture or for one’s own family and that people now hardly take the time to connect to family and friends.
Vizo also said that young people should promote local languages in whatever way possible.
“We need to be proud of our culture and teach our children to value our cultural attire and stop feeling inferior about it,” he said.
He viewed that one should take cultural day very seriously as such platform “expose our children to our culture.”
“Culture is the identity of the people and without it, society is impossible,” he said and stressed on the need do whatever is possible to revive, protect and preserve the rich culture.
Talking on the topic "Reviviscensce," Viliebeinuo Medom stated that culture is everything that is associated with our lives, the basic of our traditions, values, cultural protocols, spirituality, language etc.
“We should all work hard towards reviving our culture and tradition, “Medom said.
KSCJ principal Dr Lily Sema informed that from now onwards, every Wednesday, it will be mandatory for the students to use their traditional attire or something about their own culture to showcase as well as to imbibe in them, a sense of their own identity.
This step, she maintained, was in line with Minister of Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along’s directive to all government and semi government schools and colleges to set apart Wednesday for students to dress up in their own traditional attire.
She further encouraged the staffs to be a part of it.
She said that cultural day has been designed to encourage and coming together as one people and to show Nagas rich heritage.
“We are at the threshold of losing our culture and identity, if we are not careful,” she cautioned.
She advised the students to remain connected to their roots and be united.
Earlier, a fusion song was presented by Otto Yepto and friends followed by a play on traditional folktale by Department of English.
Kereibeinuo also presented the melodious song "Ara Kizivi."
The formal function was followed by cultural extravaganza. The programme was chaired by Seyiekhrielie Whiso, Assistant Professor, Department of English, KSCJ.
