Dimapur, Nov 9 (MExN): As a part of National Legal Literacy Day, the legal services authorities Nagaland conducted an awareness programme at Salt Christian College with Mayanglima ADC (J)/ Member Secretary, Dimapur District Legal Service Authority, as one of the resource person.
He said that in Nagaland there is the Nagaland Legal Service Authority with its Member Secretary at Kohima and each District Legal Services Authority. “The concept of social justice is enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution of India, he said and that the NALSA, through its numerous initiatives, is trying to help the communities to realize the Constitutional safeguards for their empowerment. While at the grass root, the National Legal Literacy Mission has been initiated and received a laudable impact and report from the common citizens, at the Decision Makers Forums” he said. Also, the NALSA has taken path- breaking steps to establish dialogue and interaction, to reach to consensus for social justice and equality, he asserted adding that the right to justice is NALSA’s mandate. The Right to Justice possibly is also the most comprehensive right one can secure in civil life in a democratic republic as ours. The Right to Justice can be secured by adopting the following means: making provisions of competent and free legal aid for every marginalized individual and community, by preparing the communities with the knowledge of legal rights and awareness regarding legal services and redress mechanisms; by raising grass root forums for access to justice to the marginalized and the poorest of the poor; by raising a technically qualified and sensitized army of para-legal aid counsels and by creating linkage and integration of students and media advocacy programmes to give further voice and strength to the awareness of social justice needs and initiatives, he informed.
Mayanglima also gave a precise purpose of Lok Adalats . A student from the Dimapur City Law College shared his perspective on the usefulness of ‘free legal aid’ and explained the “legal aids provide free legal service.” “It also ensures that justice is done to all with free legal assistance. Any one having grievances can come to the Free Legal Aid cell, which is in the Dimapur City Law College” the student informed. Later, a topic relating to crimes meted out to women and children and the legal provisions against these as safeguards, was also discussed. There was also held an interaction where students raised questions on legal rights.
