Acharya urges MLAs to adopt villages and empower villagers
Kohima, August 21 (MExN): Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Neiphiu Rio called on the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya on August 19 at Raj Bhavan, Kohima.
Among several issues discussed, Rio apprised the Governor of the developmental projects taken up in Selouphe village in Dimapur, which was adopted by the MP under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) in November 2014.
A press release from PRO to Governor informed that Rio has now adopted Longwa in Mon district as his second village under SAGY as suggested by the Governor earlier. Informing that the traditional Angh’s house in Longwa has been renovated under SAGY, Rio invited the Governor to inaugurate it during the month of October, 2016.
Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana was initiated to bring the Members of Parliament of all political parties under the same umbrella while taking the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in villages and turning them into model villages, the release said. Under the scheme, each Member of Parliament needs to choose one village from the constituency they represent, except their own village or their in-laws village and fix parameters and make it a model village.
Thereafter, they can take on two or three more villages and do the same by the time the next general elections come along in 2019, it added. The adopted villages will be offered smart schools, universal access to basic health facilities, and pucca housing to homeless villagers.
The Governor appealed to all the elected MLAs to adopt a village or two with the same spirit in their own constituency. Quoting the Indian President that “India is a country of villages," Acharya stated that village development is the development of the whole country. On that note, he urged all the MLAs to develop the villages and empower the villagers.
