An awareness programme was held on January 30 at the Satakha Town Hall, Zunheboto, to mark National Road Safety Month under the theme “Parwaah Karenge, Surakshit Rahenge” (Will take care to stay safe). The event was organized by the District Transport Office, Zunheboto.
The programme was chaired by N. Nchumbemo Kikon, AEI, and began with a welcome address by M.S Thangpong, ADC Satakha, who emphasized the importance of road safety. He highlighted that National Road Safety Month is observed to promote awareness about road safety measures. He underscored the significance of wearing seat belts, following traffic rules, and avoiding reckless driving. He also pointed out the need for wearing helmets on two-wheelers and condemned irresponsible hit-and-run incidents.
Er. Hukayi Awomi, Additional Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), delivered a speech on road safety, explaining that National Road Safety Month was first observed in 1989 and later formalized in January 2021 as an annual campaign. He emphasized the importance of awareness about road safety and the duties of the District Transport Office. Awomi also urged the public to ensure the proper functioning of their vehicles by regularly checking the brakes, engine oil, Tyre pressure, coolant levels, and mirrors.
During his address, Awomi highlighted the critical role of following traffic rules, noting that army vehicles strictly adhere to them. He further explained that roadways account for 90% of transportation, with airways, railways, and waterways making up only 10%. He shared alarming statistics, revealing that in Uttar Pradesh, one person dies every three minutes in road accidents. Additionally, he noted that 95% of accidents occur due to careless driving, with the majority involving young adults between the ages of 16-35.
Awomi also spoke about the importance of providing a valid blood group on one’s driving license, which can be crucial in emergencies. He provided information on driving license eligibility, emphasizing that individuals can apply for a license at age 16 for 50cc vehicles, 18 for light vehicles, and 21 for heavy vehicles, with mandatory renewals every three years.
Motor Vehicle Checker (MVC) Lanuyanger discussed traffic violations and penalties, stressing that vehicles must display a High-Security Number Plate for identification.
The event was attended by members of the Satakha Town Council, ADC Satakha, Satakha Taxi Union, GBs, leaders, and elders of the town. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Veto Zhimo, Deputy Chairperson of the Satakha Town Council, and a benediction pronounced by Kheholi, Counselor of Satakha Town Council.
