Roundtable on sustainable management of jhum in North East India- Day 2
Dimapur, November 21 (DIPR): A panel discussion on ‘Land tenure and role of traditional institutions in jhum management’ and presentations on ‘lessons from investment in sustainable management of upland farming system in the north east’ were conducted during the first and second session of the ongoing Roundtable on sustainable management of jhum in north east India at hotel Acacia, Dimapur on November 21.
Principal Secretary & APC, T. Imkonglemba Ao who moderated the first session briefed the gathering about the formation of new villages in earlier days and its practices. While giving a preview of the Naga villages and its practices to the participants for better implementation of the project, he said that the role of village administration is an important issue to consider. PAC explained in detail how village council administers the jhum cycle for the whole farmer within the village and its powers in functions.
Director, ICAR, for North East, Dr SV Ngachan gave a PowerPoint presentation about the alternative s to shifting cultivation in the north east India. Some of the constraints in jhum improvement, he highlighted in his presentation were due to no cadastral survey in NEH region, land tenure emergence of land less population, unplanned cultivation, resource poor to accept emprovise technology and high cost inputs in conversion from shifting cultivation to settled cultivation.
Vice chancellor, Martin Luther University, Shillong, Vincent Darlong also gave a powerpoint presentation about the inter-related domains of traditional institutions, Land tenure and jhum management.
During the second session Programme Director, GiZ, Shillong, Dr. Klaus-Peter Gross, Lianchawii from UNDP, Sentimongla Kichuchar from Tata Trust, Meera Mishra from IFAD and Director NERCORMP, Adrian Marbaniang gave presentations about their activities in the region on the topic 'lessons from investment in sustainable Management of Upland Farming System in the north east.
The second session was moderated by Chief Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Pankaj Kumar.
