The Kabui (Rongmei) community of Kohima today celebrated its premier festival- Chakaan Gaan-Ngai with zest and traditional gaiety at its community hall in Naga Bazaar.
T. Khel Council chairman Thepfuvilie Suohu and Naga Bazaar Panchayat chairman Thezielhoulie Sorhie extended warmest greetings to the community and wish them healthy and prosperous life.
They also assured their support and assistance as and when require for the well being of the community. Greeting was shared by Patrick Golmei while Babu Golmei chaired the celebration.
Delivering vote of thanks, Zinia Gangmei also stated that Chakaan Gaan-Ngai is a post harvest festival celebrated when the granaries are full; the landscape dry, the whole village is free from all agricultural works that people turn to celebration, festivity, worship the God and honour the dead. This festival is also described as a new year festival as it marks the end of the year and beginning of the new year, she said, adding that during Gaan-Ngai those who died in the previous year are given a farewell ritual wherein their graves are beautified, dances are performed in their honour, feast is given to the community in the honour of the dead.
Gaan-Ngai is thus the festival of both the death and living, she said.
The celebration was marked by cultural dances and song by different groups, beside the community feast.
