Rs 4 crore demonetized fake currency seized in Manipur

Manipur Police on Thursday recovered a huge quantity of fake currency notes of demonetized Rs 1000 denominations during a raid at an abandoned hut at Keirao Wangkhem in Imphal East district. The police arrested two persons including the owner of the hut identified as Chingkham Dewan Singh (50). The other person arrested in a follow up action to the disclosure made by Dewan was identified as Chingakham Surchandra Singh (40).

Addressing reporters, Thoubal district superintendent of police, Dr Jogeshchandra Haobam said that the fake currency notes totaling to Rs 4 crore were found when a team of police commandos raided the abandoned hut early today morning. He also said that when the police commando team rushed to the area based on specific information, they found the hut locked with a padlock. After cordoning the hut, the police called up the owner of the hut to unlock it. The fake currency notes were found stored in the hut, he said.

From the disclosure made by the two arrested persons, the police revealed that the demonetized fake currency notes were handed over to the two persons by one Tony of Waithou of Thoubal currently residing at Keirao Wangkhem. A nephew of Tony identified as Arun Singh was also involved in the case, the police officer said.

For what purpose the demonetized currency notes were being collected by them is yet to be ascertained, the police officer added.

The arrested persons along with the seized items were handed over to Irilbung police station for further investigation, the police officer further added.
