Rural areas of Kiphire district register low COVID-19 vaccination

Only 60 people from 105 villages vaccinated

To assess the progress of COVID-19 vaccination drive in Kiphire district, the District Task Force (DTF) held a review meeting with ADC Kiphire, Rahul Mali, IAS in the presence of MLA T Yangseo Sangtam at DC’s Conference Hall, Kiphire town on June 14.

Highlighting the overall COVID scenario in Kiphire, the ADC informed that so far 400 people have been vaccinated in Kiphire town whereas only 60 people from 105 villages have taken the vaccine in rural area under Kiphire district.

Calling upon the people of Kiphire to come forward for the vaccination, the ADC said, “it has been proven that vaccine is vital in saving so many lives and therefore, people should have faith in the vaccine.”

MLA appeals not to be swayed away by baseless rumours

Addressing the meeting, MLA Yangseo who was recently appointed as Chairman of Kiphire District Planning Development Board asserted the importance of the vaccine and appealed to the people “not to be swayed away by baseless rumours about the vaccine but to believe in science based evidence.” He said, “Government will not give vaccine to its citizens if it was at all harmful. Come forward and take vaccine for the safety of oneself, family, friends and society.”

Citing the advantage of taking vaccine, the MLA pointed out that as per the health department data, “high rate of morality among COVID death has been attributed to those who did not take vaccine whereas for those who took COVID shield remain safe and has quickly recovered from the disease.” 

The MLA said that he himself has taken the vaccine and “it is safe just like any other vaccine.” He reiterated that COVID shield is important to build a strong, fit and vibrant society.

Highlights need of awareness 

Expressing concern on the low rate of vaccination, the MLA called upon CSOs, community and church leaders to educate and spread awareness about the importance of taking vaccine as it is the only way to protect oneself from the disease.

“Though there is still strong vaccine hesitant among large section of people,” he said, “it was good to see people slowly realising the importance of vaccine and coming forward to receive vaccine.” He also called upon leaders, youths and intellectuals to join hands in propagating the advantage of vaccine in rural area in war footing as there was no alternative to fight the pandemic.

The MLA also visited the patients at COVID Hospital and the ongoing Oxygen Plant construction at the District Hospital. He also donated 400 bags of rice and Ayush medicine to the daily wage earners and labourers, PPE Kits, N-95 mask and layer mask.
