Safety concerns at Medziphema town’s NH 29 junction raised

Organisations demand action against contractors

Dimapur, March 29 (MExN): The Medziphema Town Public Forum (Medziphema Town Mechü Krotho) and GB Union Medziphema have raised concerns over the lack of safety measures at the main junction of National Highway (NH) 29, Chainage 137 KM (Medziphema Town), and urged the Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima to take immediate action.

According to the organisations, the contractors (NHIDCL) responsible for 4-laning the highway have failed to comply with the guidelines and rules set by the authority. This has resulted in a lack of bus bays on the right-hand side of the highway, putting both commuters and pedestrians in danger as buses are forced to park on the main carriage way. Despite land compensations being paid to the landowners and ROW pillars being erected for construction of such lanes, the most important lane for safety was not constructed, it added.

Furthermore, the lack of drainage at the main junction on the right-hand side of the highway has caused storm water to flood at the base of the SBI building and spread to the adjoining road during rainy days. In addition, there is no pavement for pedestrians on both sides of the highway, making it unsafe for them to walk in the town. Waiting sheds and footbridges, which were promised by the contractors, have also not been constructed, the organisations pointed out in a letter to the DC on Wednesday.

The organisations urged the Deputy Commissioner to take necessary action for the welfare and safety of both the public and commuters in the letter appended by MTMK President, Akhoto Kuotsu; MTMK General Secretary, Thejangukho Yalietsu, MTMK Vice President Acalie Khate, and GB Union President, Rokovitso Kuotsu.
