Dimapur, September 22 (MExN): Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, conducted an anti-plastic pollution campaign on September 21 as part of the nationwide “Swachhata Hi Seva 2024” initiative. The drive began at 7:50 a.m. and saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff, who joined forces to tackle plastic waste in key areas around the college campus.

The “Swachhata Hi Seva 2024” campaign, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, aims to promote environmental cleanliness and community engagement across the country. This year’s theme, “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskar Swachhata,” emphasizes voluntary action to address environmental issues, particularly the rising threat of plastic pollution. Salesian College’s initiative reflects its commitment to both education and environmental stewardship.

The college organized various student clubs to take responsibility for specific areas. The Eco and Bosco Clubs led a thorough cleanup of the Tin Alin area in Thahekhu, while the Red Ribbon Club and National Service Scheme focused on the railway track up to Thahekhu gate. Meanwhile, the Literary, Yuva, and Media Clubs collaborated to clear the Good Shepherd Seminary area of plastic waste.

Participants engaged in plogging—a combination of jogging and collecting litter—underscoring the campaign’s focus on both physical well-being and environmental action. “It’s about more than just cleaning up; it’s about being proactive in creating the world we want to live in,” one student remarked.

Salesian College Principal Fr. Dr. Paul Punii SDB lauded the initiative, stating, “This campaign serves a dual purpose. It helps clean our environment while instilling in our students the values of responsibility, teamwork, and discipline—qualities essential for a sustainable future.”

By integrating environmental consciousness into its curriculum and extracurricular activities, Salesian College continues to inspire its students to become active agents of change, contributing to efforts that make a tangible difference in their communities.
