Kohima, March 23 (DIPR): The Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan also the former Governor of Nagaland graced the 7th Open Nagaland Wrestling Tournament 2011, as the chief guest on 23rd March 2011 at the Kohima local ground. Addressing the gathering, Sankaranarayanan appealed to all the patriotic people of Nagaland to work together in order to create an environment of peace and security. Underlining human resources as the most important determinant of overall development, the Governor of Maharashtra said that Nagaland’s competitive edge would be determined by its people’s ability to create, share and use knowledge effectively.
Sankaranarayanan said that he wished to see Nagaland becoming one of the most progressive and peaceful states in the country. “The opening of India’s economy has ushered us in a new era of development, progress and prosperity,” he reminded. Describing the Naga style of wrestling as a very popular indigenous game, especially amongst the Tenyimis, Sankaranarayanan complimented the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) for making the event as a state level event and also for its organised efforts, thereby increasing the popularity of the game.
The Governor of Maharashtra further said that he has developed keen interest for the game after watching the Naga style of wrestling during his stay in Nagaland between February 2007 and July 2009. “These are our unique cultural traditions and we must protect them by offering them state patronage”, he maintained. He expressed happiness over the state of Nagaland’s seriousness in protecting and promoting the Naga style of wrestling and complimented both the State Government and the NWA for their concern in promoting the indigenous game. “I am sure, such an event will attract large number of tourists, especially foreign tourists to the country”, he added. Later, K. Sankaranarayanan declared the wrestling meet open.
In the inaugural programme, President, NWA delivered the welcome address, while Alder Club, Khonoma presented a folk song. Vice President, NWA administered the oath to the participating wrestlers while Associate Pastor Rev. I. Yapang said the invocation.
Among others, the programme was attended by the chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, officials of NWA, sports lovers and the general public. The programme is being organised by the Angami Sports Association under the aegis of Naga Wrestling Association.
