Sao Chang College, Tuensang conducts community extension programme

Tuensang, May 12 (MExN): The Department of English, Sao Chang College, Tuensang, conducted a community extension programme by visiting Government Middle School, Wongtsuwong, Old Medical Sector ‘A’, Tuensang, on May 10. 

During the brief informal session, Akyuba Sangtam, Head of English Department, stated that educational institutions thrive due to the support of the local community and therefore they in turn should give back to the community in whatever capacity it can.

Citing the present conditions, he exhorted the teachers present that Government run schools cannot afford to be luxurious and therefore make the best use of the available resources at hand. 

Meanwhile, the School Management Committee Chairman, Toshi Yim expressed gratitude to the visiting faculty and the accompanying 6th semester English Honours students. Head Teacher Sotsula also thanked the visiting team on behalf of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school. 

Notebooks along with pencil boxes were distributed to 30 lower section students while the team also interacted with the children during the visit. The visit was part of extension service activities of the Department whereby periodic extension services are rendered to the local community, informed a press release from the college. 

Tagore’s Birth Anniversary
Meanwhile, on May 9, the department observed Rabindranath Tagore’s Birth Anniversary, during which HoD Sangtam gave a brief talk to the participants on the achievements of the poet laureate of India while highlighting Tagore’s immense contribution to the Indian culture, national unity and communal harmony. 

As the voice of India’s national awakening and spiritual heritage his poetry influenced many generations across whose writings also helped spread Indian Culture and philosophy all over the world, he said. 

The programme was chaired by Dr Soyimla Akum, Assistant Professor (English) while vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, an Associate Professor of the department.
