Nine community representatives from villages under the Satoi Range in Nagaland are participating in a six-day capacity-building programme on Hoolock Gibbon conservation at the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in Mariani, Assam.
The programme, which commenced on June 17, is being organised by Aaranyak, a conservation organisation working for the protection of Hoolock Gibbons and biodiversity across Nagaland, Assam, Karbi Anglong, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
The training programme was inaugurated by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Zunheboto, Obed Bohovi Swu, who said the participants had been selected under the Satoi Connect Initiative of the Zunheboto Forest Division to enhance local knowledge and awareness on the conservation of the Hoolock Gibbon, an endangered primate species found in the forests of the Satoi Range.
Swu said the initiative aims to strengthen community participation in wildlife conservation by equipping local representatives with practical knowledge and conservation skills.
The programme is being spearheaded by renowned primatologist Dr Dilip Chetry, Head of the Primate Research and Conservation Division of Aaranyak, Guwahati.
During the six-day programme, participants are expected to gain first-hand experience and insights into primate conservation, habitat management and community-based conservation practices.
