SAYO ‘Plastic Free Dzükou’ initiative gets support from Earth Day Network

Kohima, July 15 (MExN): The recent declaration of ‘Plastic Free Zone Dzükou’ an initiative of Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO), finds support from Earth Day Network, a global environment NGO that grew out of the first Earth Day (April 22, 1970) and today engages with over 50,000 organisations in around 190+ countries.

Earth Day Network, Regional Director, South Asia, Karuna A. Singh congratulated SAYO on the work being done in declaring Dzükou valley as plastic free zone, situated in one of the world’s, Indo-Myanmar, biodiversity hotspot, stated a DIPR report. 

“Keeping in mind our common goals, we look forward to discussing with you the ways to synergize our effort to ‘Protect Our Species.’ We would be happy to share resource material for joint programs toward this end,” Singh wrote in an email sent to SAYO President on July 10, 2019.    

In 2010, Earth Day Network opened its office in India. Retired PCCF & HoFF of Nagaland, M. Lokeswara Rao, IFS (Rtd.) is presently the Director, Earth Day Network, India ‘Protect Our Species.’ Every year, EDN announces the Earth Day Theme for global focus with this year’s theme as ‘Protect Our Species.’ Works have begun on protecting the critically endangered Hangul in Kashmir and the Gangetic Dolphin in Varanasi. 2020 will mark EDN’s 50th anniversary and organisatons such as the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, NASA, the UN and UNEP (among others) have already formulated plans for its commemoration.

Luminaries such as Stacey Sher, Lisa Jackson, Richard Branson, Leonardo Dicaprio, William D. Ruckelshaus and Anil Kapoor are among the Global Advisory Committee of Earth Day Network.
