Kohima, September 2 (MExN): The annual cultural day of Sazolie College, Jotsoma was jointly organised by the Cultural Committee and Students’ Council of the college on September 1. The objective of the event was to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of the students of different communities, from Nagaland and outside, studying in the institution.
The day also intended to create awareness among the students about the need to preserve their rich cultural heritage and aimed at educating the students to respect the different cultures and people they encounter or come across in their lives.
Waluniba Jamir, Vice-Principal spoke on the importance of identity and stressed that an individual’s identity should be preserved and maintained by learning one’s own mother tongue, folklore and good cultural traditions or practices. He also gave a brief narration of the origin of Ao Nagas and sang an Ao folksong.
The programme included presentation of folksongs, folk-fusion and re-enactment of folktales by different groups like the Angami, Sumi, Lotha, Ao, Chakhesang and Eastern Naga tribes. A display of the different traditional costumes was another highlight of the programme.
The Ao students were declared as the winners for their sterling performance of a drama based on the legend of Jina and Etiben. The Eastern Naga students and the Angami students were awarded the second and third positions respectively. In the class-wise category, Tsiosela of Semester V was awarded the first position for her bollywood dance.
