Kohima, December 11 (MExN): The official ‘Clean Toilet Campaign IEC visual’ was launched by Zhaleo Rio, IAS (Rtd) MLA, Advisor, Urban Development & Municipal Affairs at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima on December 11.

To spread the message of having clean toilets and the importance of maintaining them, the State Mission Directorate, SBM-U 2.0 Nagaland, with the help of Dreamz Unlimited created a video in line with the ongoing Clean Toilet Campaign.

Keeping in mind that having clean toilets becomes a community effort, the Mission Directorate released the video with the hope that the message reaches every nook and corner of the State, stated a press release issued by the Urban Development Department, Nagaland.

The Campaign (November 19 to December 25) is underway with the objective to improve the operations and maintenance of public and community toilets in urban India through a 5-week long mass cleanliness and maintenance drive across all toilets. Under Phase 1 of the Mission or SBM-U 1.0, 661 community/public toilets were provided to 19 ULBs/Towns of Nagaland.

Elizabeth Ngully, State Mission Director, SBM-U stressed the prevailing issue of improper septic tanks and faecal sludge being released in the drains. In addition, she shared the statistics that there are 3.5 billion people still living without safe toilets, 419 million people still practise open defecation and the need for cleaner toilets rises day by day saying that 1000 children under 5 are killed every single day through diseases emerging from dirty toilets. She ended her speech by challenging the attendees to practice keeping all public toilets clean.

The video was officially launched by Zhaleo Rio, IAS (Rtd.), Advisor Urban Development & Municipal Affairs. He pondered as to why this was still a campaign when essentially everyone should be actively participating and making clean toilets a necessity and a reality. He thanked the State Mission Director for actively undertaking actions to achieve the goal of a better, cleaner and healthier Nagaland.
