School Edu to have composite schools, rationalization of teachers, says Sukhalu

Addressing the inaugural function of the three-day workshop for mathematic teachers at Ura Academy Hall under the aegis of Directorate of School Education, Advisor of School Education, KT Sukhalu said, “We have taken a decision to have composite schools and rationalization of teachers by the end of this month.”  

While stating that many government schools do not have math and science teachers in the state, he thanked the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the cabinet for taking a decision to convert some teacher posts to that of math and science.  

He maintained that the government has not been able to post math and science teachers and also facing shortage of teachers, whereas the urban areas have excess teachers. Sukhalu also informed that the department will also work out students-teachers ratio soon.  

He assured that government will try its best to see that math and science teachers and Headmaster and Assistant Headmaster is posted soon. "Personal attention is required by the students to improve and overcome the phobia of math and science," he said. He also called upon the teachers to ensure better performance of 2019 HSLC and HSSLC exams.  

Briefing on the Mathematics module, Dr Sandip Ratna, Associate Professor State Council for Teachers Education said that a finding of National Achievement Survey conducted jointly by NCERT and UNICEF, 2017 in Nagaland, covering three standards of classes 3, 5 and 8 show that 64% of class 3, 46% of Class 5 & 34% of class 8 students responded correctly on Mathematics. It is evident from the data that students' performance is good in Math at early stages.  

In his study “Methodology practiced by Math Teachers in Secondary School of Nagaland’ conducted uin in 2016, Methodology practiced by Math Teachers in Secondary School of Nagaland shows that there is a mismatch between teachers’ teaching style and students’ learning which is an important factor of poor performance in math. While in private School Math Teacher uses variety of teaching methods, conducts frequent test, provides more attention whenever necessary.  

The primary objective of the three-day workshop would be to highlight on problems of teaching-learning of mathematics, to introduce constructivist approach of teaching-learning which is a new trend in T-L, how easily can we introduce different topics of mathematics in class, hand-on practices by participants on some selected topics and group discussion and get feedback for further improvement on Ready Reckoner. The workshop will culminate on October 17.
