Security beefs up in Manipur ahead of R-Day

Cordon and search operations were conducted at several places in the valley areas of Manipur on Monday as part of enhancing security measure in view of the upcoming Republic Day celebration.
Police sources said that as many as eight "suspects" including three bailed-out militants were picked up during the operations conducted in Imphal West and Imphal East districts. One of the suspects was detained by a combined team of Imphal East police commandos and troops of 15 Assam Rifles during a search operation at Kangla Sangomshang under Porompat police station on Monday morning. The suspect has been handed over to the concerned police station for further investigation, the source also said.
Besides conducting house to house search, the security forces also verified around 300 people of ages ranging from 15 to 60 by parading them at a public ground of the locality
Imphal West police commandos also conducted similar operations at various localities within the district this morning.
In one such operation at Singjamei Oinam Thingel under Sangjamei police station, altogether 241 persons (157 males and 84 females) including three underground bailed-outs and 11 tenants were verified. After spot verification, seven persons including the three bailed-outs and four tenants were detained and handed over to Singjamei police station for further verification.
Another team of police commandos of the same district raided some lodging hotels in Paona Bazar areas. There was no report of picking up of any suspect in the operation.
Police commandos in Thoubal district also conducted search cordon and search operation at Langathel village of the district this morning. No arrest was made even as villagers including women were paraded at a public ground and verified.
It can be noted here that the security measures have been taken up as preventive measures to check any disruptive activity of the anti-social elements before and during the celebrations of the Republic Day, a senior police officer said
