“If we apply our mind in any kind of job, we will succeed,” were the words of IPS (Probationer), Vishal, speaking as resource person at the ‘Career Guidance & Spiritual Orientation Programme’ on April 28 at the GCYM, Sovima. The 3-day programme, which started on April 26, was organised in commemoration of the Akhoya Students’ Union’s 75th anniversary and sponsored by the Dimapur Akhoya Fellowship.
Vishal, who has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and corporate experience, spoke of making educational and career choices and how to approach one’s preferred field. Defining career planning as “a deliberate process of knowing who you are so you can be sure of where you want to go or what you want to be at some defined point in your life,” Vishal said that building a paying career is subject to the individual’s bent of mind. Breaking down the process of planning, he said that “self-assessment” as in one’s strengths and weaknesses should be foremost followed by exploring options based on one’s inherent aptitude. Narrowing down the list of options and setting eyes on a preferred subject or field will eventually define an individual’s career, he said.
“Try to find out what appeals to you… knowing what you like, your strength and your weakness. If you can master it then you’ll definitely succeed.”
Determining the needs as in the kind of support that will be required to set a career course is also important, he added. Citing his own example, he said that not all parents can afford to send their children to the best institutions and in situations like that assessing the family’s financial position will help the individual to explore other avenues. He said that after acquiring his engineering degree he took a brief corporate path to support himself before embarking on a mission to clear the civil services and become a public servant. He though had a word of caution for the civil services aspirants, “Come to the government sector to serve the society and not otherwise.”
Displaying a list of the various educational and career options, which was handed out to the students in attendance, he said, “Start thinking, read, discuss with your seniors and teachers… you will get to know and come across a myriad of ideas.” Terming the power of imagination as a great guiding force, he said that preserving and nurturing an idea relentlessly while working on it will ultimately result in fruition.
