Kohima, February 27 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women, Kohima in collaboration with SASRD, Nagaland University’s Cell for Elimination of Sexual Harassment & Task Force to deal with Gender based violence and Gender Sensitization and Students’ Union: SASRD organized a seminar on gender sensitization among the youth on February 26 in SASRD auditorium.
The programme was chaired by Kakheli Jakhalu, member NSCW, while the welcome address was given by Prof. M. Aleminla Ao. In the introductory address Dr. Temsula Ao, Chairperson, NSCW, said that no matter what laws and ordinances and other such measures are enacted and put in place, if the attitude of respect for the other gender is not instilled and inculcated, then the essence of humanity will not be there. She reiterated the importance having a positive mindset that respects and upholds the uniqueness of all humans and to uphold human dignity in all walks of life. Gender sensitization should start from the home and family and should be taught in the schools and colleges so that it becomes a way of life, she asserted.
Dr. Pauline Alila, Assoc Prof Department of Horticulture, highlighted the functions of the Cell for Elimination of Sexual Harassment as well as the Task Force to deal with gender based violence and gender sensitization which has been constituted in SASRD.
Khrietsünuo Mere, Women Welfare Secretary, SU: SASRD gave an account of her role in the students union and also expressed her views on discrimination and the need to change mindsets not only of boys but also girls. Watisenla Longkumer, B. Sc. (Ag) Hons 2nd Year gave a talk about gender sensitization and the need of her generation to become enlightened and truly educated torch bearers to make a difference and to bring about a change.
Otto Awomi, PhD Research Scholar, Department of Entomology, in his talk rued the fact that bias and even discrimination against men by giving preferences to women especially in job postings etc are accepted as normal. While acknowledging that women do suffer he also pointed out that if the women are timid and do not voice out their opinions/grievances then nothing will change because change has to come from within oneself.
Asangla Cholong, member NSCW highlighted the work done by the Commission. This was followed by an informal discussion. The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Viqheshe Futhena, General Secretary SU: SASRD.
