Senapati protests ‘rape & attempt to murder’ of minor

Newmai News Network Senapati | August 4   A massive rally was held at Senapati district headquarters today in protest against the “rape and attempt to murder” incident of Senapati.   On August 1 evening, a 15-year-old girl was found in an unconscious state at Viewland colony of Senapati district headquarters. She is being treated at a hospital in Imphal and is still observed in the ICU.   At Senapati Town today, a large number of people including school students joined the protest rally. The rally started around 10:00 am and continued for several hours in the heart of the town.   So far the police are yet to book the culprits. It is also still not certain whether the police have any lead regarding the incident.   Meanwhile, the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Senapati, Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M), Liangmaipui Ruangdi and Women Action for Development (WAD) have strongly condemned the incident.   The ADC, Senapati has termed the incident as “heinous and beastly act”. It also appealed the public to co-operate with the law enforcing agencies in eliminating such kind of “demonic and barbaric act” from the society. The ADC then conveyed its “heartfelt pain” and shared the “agony” of the victim and her family members.   The LNC-M in its strongest term condemned the “rape and an attempt to murder” of the school girl. “It has been two days since the heinous crime occurred and the culprit(s) is still roaming free,” expressed the LNC-M, while calling upon the law enforcing agencies to take swift actions and book the culprits immediately. “Befitting punishment should be awarded to the culprits as per the customary law,” it demanded.   On Thursday, Manipur Minister of Tribal Affairs & Hills and Fisheries N. Kayisü visited the victim at the hospital.   Expressing his strong resentment, N. Kayisü termed the incident as a “heinous crime”, which “comes out of an inhuman act.” The minister also met the relatives of the victim and interacted with them at length, according to a State government statement. He expressed his concern and assured to extend all possible help and support for the treatment of the minor victim and also to ensure justice to the victim and her family.   Later, N. Kayisü called on the Management and Medical Staff of the hospital and asked them to extend fullest co-operation and give the best possible treatment to the girl, the statement added. “It may be also mentioned that the minister had earlier instructed the Senapati Police headquarters to investigate the incident and arrest the culprit immediately as per the law,” the statement added.
