Kohima | April 30 : The 6th foundation day of 80 Plus Friendship, Kohima village was observed today at the Kohima Village Ground, Ziekezou with Banuo Z. Jamir, IAS Additional Chief Secretary as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Jamir termed the gathering as the rare occasion where the elders above the age of 80 years come together and interact with one another. She also stated that the platform provides an opportunity to many youngsters to hear from them and also receive their blessing and wisdom. She lauded the efforts of Friends of 80 Plus for showing due care and respect to 80 plus citizens. Stating that there is no ending ray of learning, she said that even if they cannot go out at their age, they have ability to teach their children at home like making handcraft, knitting and singing.
She stated that work education has been introduced in schools by education department under SSA realizing the need of experts and skills of senior citizens to teach the students in making bags, shawls, handicrafts. She maintained that the project have so far been successful in the state. With this, the students are now able to make shawl, bag and handicrafts and sales day was organized at one point of time in Kohima. “It is a big encouragement,” she said maintained that education is not only focus at schools but also at home too.
She also released a souvenir entitled “Khrietho”- a collection of the activities and photos.
Friends of 80 Plus was formed by few likeminded citizens of Kohima village to reach out to elders above the age of 80 in a spirit of friendship, respect and shared responsibility, said Neidonuo Angami, convenor, Friends of 80 Plus. Since its inception in 2006, Friends of 80 Plus has facilitated a number of get-together of all 80 Plus citizens of the village whereby they not only get an opportunity to meet with each other, share stories and remember good old days but also receive physical and medical care from the medical team especially from Naga Hospital, Kohima. “This get-together is an annual event, and is marked by great feasting and fun activities,” said Neidonuo in a souvenir brought on the occasion.
Alongside the medical camp as annual event, Friends of 80 Plus also mobilize resources to provide free medicines and other medical needs for the elders throughout the year which is being facilitated by 80 Plus volunteers on regular basis. All the organizations and churches in Kohima village have been extremely supportive to this small initiative. Community leaders, politicians and stakeholders of the village in particular and Nagaland state in general has promoted and supported the project through their encouragements and monetary contributions.
“Most importantly, the young volunteers assigned as khel representatives, who are considered the main torch bearers of this idea undertake regular home visits and reach out to the elders and keep the Friends of 80 Plus members informed of any needs or concerns,” she added.
Chairing the function, Keduotuolie Mepfhüo said that at present there are 147 number of 80 plus citizens in Kohima village.
As part of good gesture, Oking Hospital Kohima also sponsored medical camp for 80 plus citizens and many turned up for check up and treatment. Methaneilie Jütakhrie presented a special number along with Friends of 80 Plus. Message from elders was brought by Kereivilie Kire. The programme was followed by a grand feast hosted by Mr and Mrs Phrezo Francis Belho in memory of their father Late Raneilie and mother Late Konuo Belho.
