Sounds of automatic gunfire reverberated along the Dimapur-Peren district boundary in a piece of disputed land on September 6. Police sources said that over 200 rounds of bullets were fired allegedly targeting a new village settlement located in a contested territory falling between the southern fringes of Dimapur district and the Jalukie valley, Peren. 


As per the sources, the incident occurred around 4:30pm in a proposed new village situated around 5km from Jalukie town. 


Citing preliminary reports from villagers, the sources said that some 40-50 armed persons in camouflage started firing indiscriminately in the direction of the settlement.  

 
It was reported that people were also in the settlement at the time of the gunfire but there was no casualty. 
A joint team of administration officials and police, alongwith the Assam Rifles rushed to the spot as soon as the incident was reported. 


A total of 7 thatch structures were found torched at the site and over 200 rounds of spent ammunitions of various calibres were also recovered, the sources said.  


The situation in the area was reported to be tense but under control with additional police deployment.
