Shürhozelie should 'gracefully' step down, urges former Lok Sabha MP

Dimapur, July 15 (MExN): A former Member of the Lok Sabha, Chingwang Konyak has stated that it would be “wise” on the part of Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to “gracefully step down” to maintain inner party democracy.

The former Member of Parliament in a press release stated that the majority has the constitutional right to govern, and contended, “It is neither a democratic principle nor inner party democracy to reject or refuse to accept the views of the majority.”

Chingwang pointed to T.R. Zeliang’s claims that he has the support of 36 NPF MLAs and 7 Independent MLAs and argued that the claims indicate that Dr. Shürhozelie does not enjoy the majority support of the NPF MLAs within the party nor has the majority support in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

Further citing past instances where the incumbent Chief Ministers have been replaced by persons having the support of the majority legislators, the former MP insisted that the Governor is right in directing the Chief Minister to call a meeting of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and obtain vote of confidence.

“The Governor directing the Chief Minister to call a meeting of the Assembly and prove the majority is not unconstitutional,” Chingwang maintained.
