Sickness and Healing

I have spent my life for the last 60 years among the suffering people. For the last two months, I was in Vellore Christian Medical College Hospital attending my relative who is undergoing treatment. In the process I came across many other patients who are going from post to post in search of physical healing. This has prompted me to write this short paper.

There seems to be much confusion and misunderstanding about healing. We are unable to differentiate between spiritual and physical healing. We Christians ought to be clear about the two, otherwise some false prophets may easily deceive us and give us false hope and also shatter our faith. Healing rightfully belongs only to God.

Thousands of sick people are healed every day by the power of God. He may heal through the modern diagnostic skill and machines that can let us see the exact condition of the disease, which causes the suffering and pain. God can also use all manner of medicines to assist the healing of the body. He can heal by simply changing the dietary habits of some people. He can heal in answer to prayer.

Majority of Christians live after the flesh. Those who are sick will do anything to get well. Many of them are only after the physical healing which is temporal but completely oblivious of their spiritual needs.

All diseases and physical sufferings are not the work of Satan though many of us think so. Some even go as far as to say that it is due to lack of faith. However all sickness are not the work of Satan. Sickness can come for different purposes of God.

People get sick because we live in a world that is cursed.Gen.3:17. We have to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Suffering, pain, sorrow,  and death are the result of the fall of man and the curse pronounced by God. We must all go through this first death because the “wages of sin is death” Rom.6:23. It will only be lifted for those who are saved by the blood of Christ and will not go through the second death. God’s prophet Elisha was sick and died. 2 Kings 13:14. Daniel was sick. Dan8:27. But they will not die the second death.

Sickness, sorrow, pain and death are a sure proof for the world to see that “the wages of sin is death”. Unfortunately we are not praying enough for thousands of people who are on their way to hell. Surely, we must pray for those who are physically sick and on their way to hospital.

People also can get sick because of judgement of God against sin. An example is about Mariam who suffered from leprosy because she spoke against Moses. Num.12:1-10. In Deuteronomy, God warned the Israelites of dire consequences if they were disobedient. Deu.28:58-62. Thousands of years ago, God warned us in Leviticus about a sin for which the Capital punishment was pronounced. Lev.18:23, 20:16-18. We may change the name GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) to a more pleasant name AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) But the truth remains the truth. The depth of man’s depravity of fornicating with monkeys. In whatever way we may try to camouflage the name, AIDS is from African Green monkeys.

God created man and woman for the purpose of reproduction.  The body parts were so designed to fulfill this divine commission. Any violation of God’s design of the body cannot escape judgement. Fire and Brimstone destroyed Sodom and Gomorah for such sin. AIDS is the Fire and Brimstone of 21st Century mankind.

Thirdly, people can get sick in order to make God’s Name Great. The leprosy on the hand of Moses and the healing of it glorified God. By this sign the Israelites recognized the working of God’s hand in liberating them from Pharaoh’s bondage.

Christ Jesus proved Himself as the Son of God by healing the sick, opening the eyes of the blind, raising the death and cleansing the leprous. God demonstrated Himself as the ultimate controller of this world by healing of the temporal body. Ex.4:6-8.

In case of Lazarus, Jesus said, “the sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby” John 11:1-3. The blind man in John 9:1-7 is another example. The disciples thought it was judgement of God against the sins of the man and his parents. But Jesus said. “neither this man nor his parents sin but this happened so that the work of God may be displayed v.3.

Lastly, sickness may be to make the believer more mature spiritually. Rom5:1-3. Paul was afflicted with physical infirmities. For this he prayed three times and sought divine healing. He learnt the depth and width of God’ Grace “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Cor.12:15-17, 10. Other Godly person like Trophimos was sick. 2 Tim 4:20. Epaphroditus Phil.2:25-27, Timothy 1 Tim.5:23. Many believers focus their attention only to the physical healing which is temporal but forget the healing of the spiritual which is eternal. The need for personal confrontation with God and restoration of relationship with God is more important. Physical healing may follow such restoration.
All sickness is not the work of Satan.

It may be due to:
•    A natural result of a fallen world.
•    Judgement of God against sin
•    For God to do miracle for His Glory
•    To bring Spiritual maturity in a believer.

God can heal the sick. He does heal the sick today. But God is under no obligation to do so.
