Kiphire | April 6
Hundreds of citizens from Seyochung Village staged a silent protest at Kiphire town today expressing their resentment over an order issued by the Deputy Commission’s recently.
It may be mention that on March 2, some citizens of Seyochung Village had dismantled an old house which was vacated by a displaced community of Seyochung Village. In regard to this, the DC had convened a meeting on March 30, where the Seyochung Village Council (SVC) clarified that the house was dismantled for the public safety as it posed a threat to the villagers during windy days.
The SVC further said that the house was on the verge of collapse and was dismantled in order to take safety measures. Following the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner issued an order on April 1 to Seyochung Village Council directing that the house be reconstructed within one week from the date of the DC’s letter.
In response, the Seyochung Village Council had served an ultimatum to the DC on April 4 demanding that the earlier order be revoked within 24 hours.
With the passing of the deadline, the protesters took to the streets today holding placards, some of which reads ‘Historical Facts cannot be re-written,’ ‘safety measures are not illegal,’ ‘there is only one law for all’ etc. They also submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Kiphire stating that “as justice is not delivered to us, we are staging a silent protest. We are also to mention here that since there is one law for all we don’t expect our competent Authority to issue an order when the case is registered in the Police station and when investigation is on.”
It cautioned that the protesters would be compelled to stage different forms of agitation through democratic means, if their demand to revoke the order is not fulfilled. The letter was signed by the Chairman Seyochung Village Council, Chokhaba and the Head GB of Seyochung Village.
