DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 2 (MExN): The Department of History and Fine Arts Club, St. Joseph University, Chumoukedima, Nagaland organized the first SJU Heritage Diem on the theme Ancestral Art & Heritage on November 1.
It was a first of its kind marking a history in the journey of the university since its establishment. The program was hosted by Leny Anju George of MA III semester, department of English, and was blessed with an invocation by Rev. Fr. Augustin (MMI Representative) followed by the welcome address given by Dr Avinuo Chupuo, HoD, Department of History.
Tokaholi Chishi, Assistant Professor, Department of English introduced the audience to the nature, importance, and significance of the program giving a brief history of why art and culture need to be preserved. The program was brought to life by the Department of Social Work with a Naga folk song of the Sangtam tribe titled Ihri Neng Sehre (Translation: We Praise You).
A keynote address was brought by Dr D Gnanadurai, Vice-Chancellor of SJU who enlightened the listeners with his knowledge about art, culture, traditions, and heritage. He expressed the need to understand and preserve the cultural elements which are performed by the ancestors.
Kuvlo Lorin, chairman of the Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation and the Director of Tetso College spoke on the universal understanding of culture. He encouraged students to enthusiastically focus on research, have a goal to uncover true history, venture to present their findings, and contribute to society.
There was also a performance by the MMI brothers followed by a folk dance by the department of English titled Aphilo Kuwo. Vote of thanks was presented by Lukali, Assistant Professor, department of English. Meanwhile there were 112 participants for the Morung and painting exhibition. The judges for the exhibition were Aolemba Longkumer and Akup Buchem. The programme concluded with the University Anthem sung by the SJU choir.
